Producing great pups for active families is our goal.
Using love, breed-knowledge and canine development science is our approach.

About you: if you're like most of the people we talk with,
you're looking for an active-family dobe that

will become a beloved part of their active-family life (relates to star #1)
will protect their active-family against today's dangers (relates to star #1)
is healthier than the breed average (relates to star #2)
is athletic and powerful and gets compliment after compliment (relates to star #4)

from a breeder who
carefully matches the pup to the family goals and circumstance (relates to star #3)
supports the family through anything that may come up with their new pup (relates to star #5)

About us: why we do what we do

Because we love dogs and we love Dobes. For generations, dogs have been a vital part of our family. They've always provided loving companionship, seem to feature in most of our family photos, helped teach the younger generation in our families humanity and responsibility, kept them safe and focused on the positive things in life, helped all of us to get regular exercise, warned us when someone or something was moving around outside at night, made strangers cautious around us and our home, and entertained us daily.

But we started to to become concerned quite a while back by the problem dogs being turned out by many breeders. We've seen many Dobes that were started wrong and weren't a pleasure for their families [response]. We've seen sickly dogs that are full of genetic problems. And we've seen many fashion-bred Dobes that can't fulfill the breed function of guarding with a powerful presence [genetics, structure].

Today we carefully breed and start pups so that other active-families can also experience all the joy of a great active-family Doberman: dogs that are loving and kid-safe, who's primary goal isn't to chew on the family cat, will protect to the end, with a single glance can make strangers cautious around loved ones, dogs that are clever, healthy, energetic, athletic, playful, great-looking, should live a long life, can compete in whatever events the active-family chooses [matching], and aren't bred for the latest size or color fad.

Because an active family deserves a great pup!

with the active family in a realistic variety of situations:
with friends or visitors, around threats or temptations [details]

Decades of research have examined how experiences in the first several weeks of a puppy's life determine much of its response for the rest of its life. (As the saying goes, "you can't teach an old dog new tricks".) We've studied this research.

While there's much more that sets Five Star apart, all of our dogs and litters live inside with us, and are only kenneled for short periods if at all.

This is foundational to our views on proper treatment of dogs, and of correctly starting a puppy. (Science has researched and agrees with the latter.)

These views aren't as common among breeders as you might think.

Below are a few comments from our first litter. The proof is in the pup.

Judy, Diego is doing great! He is really full of himself and has become a constant companion for all of us. He runs with us and boy does he love to run . . . I have never seen a dog with as much drive to run and run as hard as he can . . . I guess you could say that we have a lot in common....He snuggles up with the kids by the fan and loves their attention. We could not have asked for a better dog. The whole neighborhood is taken with watching him run like the wind...he is so intense and powerful but gentle at the same time. He loves people and loves to please. He is great with my 91 year old grandmother who lives across the street as well as with the two year old babies in the neighborhood. He is a pure joy. He and Scarlett get together and play a lot. They have a blast wrestling around. Diego is usually ready for her to leave so that he can have peace and quiet. She is doing great as well. She brings such joy to John's life. He treats her like the Queen of England and she just eats it up. Thank you for sharing your wonderful puppies with us and all the work you put into making them such well adjusted dogs. I will keep the new litter in mind. I would love to see pics. Hope you are well and look forward to talking to you soon."

Hildy is now an "old pro" with the leash. I think that she now looks forwards to our morning walks. She had her first class Saturday and I don't want to sound like the bragging mom but she was the best behaved of all the puppies. She sat like a little lady for almost the entire hour. Hope you all are having a wonderful Christmas season."

Hello Judy Happy New Year !! Well it has been a playfest here all day today. There is no end to the playing. Well to eat and then they get right back at it !! I had to separate them so they would go to sleep last night and I put Fiesta in her crate and she did not like it at all she cried and cried, she prefers this big dog pillow I got her so that's where I let her sleep. She stayed there all night long. I got up thru out the night and checked on her and let her out. She would come back in and go right back on her pillow.
I want to brag a little . . . I wipe Abby's feet when she comes in so she doesn't track and now I've been teaching Fiesta that she has to sit when she comes in and wait to get her feet wiped. It took her about four times until she got it! She knows now to sit when she comes in and get her feet wiped! What a dog! She's really really eager to learn !!
Have a safe and blessed new year !!!"

Cold nose, warm heart - Gigi the Dobe and Diamond the Siamese, keep each other warm on cold nights.
Our puppies are introduced to cats early on.

Inside of a Dobe, it's too dark to read.

genetically healthy, vigorous, long-lived, athletic [details]

Nobody wants to see a young, beloved family pet drop dead of heart disease or suffer from chronic and disabling hip problems.

There are two major ways to reduce this risk.
1) Consider the health of the ancestry of the breeding pair, and how it combines.
2) Take advantage of currently available health testing. Most of it needs to be refined, and much of it is not predictive, but it's much better than nothing.

This is especially important in the Doberman breed today when so many health concerns are appearing.

Responsible breeders can offer puppies that should have healthier genetics than the breed average, though integrity in this area is expensive and is surprisingly rare.

Here's the health testing we've done on the mother of our current litter.

  We love the Doberman.
And we love that our Dobermans love us back with an incredible intensity, even for dogs. We love the "Doberman Bounce". We love Doberman energy and strength and athleticism, we love that their very presence keeps our children safe, we love how responsive they are to their family, we love the precision with which they walk and sit and play. We love how they patrol the house at night, we love glancing at them and catching them watching you adoringly. We love how they lean against your leg when you're standing and lie against your foot when you're sitting. We love how they make agility (obstacle) courses look easy. We love their proud carriage.

Does your family love Dobes too? Be sure to check out our Dobe Connoisseur page!

the right pup for the right active family [details]

Iron ore carrier extreme upper left. A girl's best friend lower right.

Last week my daughter hosted a dance party at our house, and Diego and I were the last ones to find out about it. She ran around the neighborhood handing out invitations. The festivities began around 6pm. The parents started showing up a half hour later. It was a fun evening, but it sure can get pretty loud with a house full of girls having fun together!

Diego slept through the whole thing. All the parents were amazed that such a large Doberman pup (we just weighed him - he weighs 46 pounds) was so mild in such a loud but non-threatening situation."

There are a lot of misconceptions about Dobermans out there so Dante is out to show the world how sweet they really are. The attached is a picture of him with Alice, our new little tuxedo cat. It's just a snapshot, nothing fancy, but I hope to catch them one day when I can take my time and get a good shot. When I took this picture Alice was about 3 pounds and Dante was about 82 pounds. This is an every day occurrence in our house. I have to thank Tessa and Judy because they both raise their Dobies around cats from the beginning which certainly helps us who love both dogs and cats.

On a side note, Dante is also doing extremely well in his SAR training. We've been upping the ante and he has passed every test with flying colors. He will begin training for cadaver search this spring. We are now with TERRA, TN Emergency Rescue and Response Association. Those of you that have met Dante know he is a very high drive, highly motivated dog. Its that aspect of him that inspired our k9/handler call name of Overdrive. It seemed fitting and I had a few choices but out team voted unanimously for Overdrive. There again, those of you that know Dante are not wondering why!"

Did you know the Doberman gets five stars for loyalty from the AKC?

functional and attractive [details]

Many Dobes today are light-boned and slender to look elegant in the show ring. But we believe that Dobes need to be powerfully boned and muscled to remain true to their original purpose - protection.

Dante is doing great! He's up to 70 pounds now and I swear walking next to him is like walking next to a super model. Everyone wants to meet him wherever we are and I don't think there is a better dobe ambassador out there! Everyone who meets him loves him and he has become quite popular at our vets office. He is such a social dog and he loves other dogs. We have met other dobe's at the dog park and it's funny because they always play best together. Males and females alike. I love it when we run into other dobe owners. They always comment on how big and beautiful Dante is."
